LEAD-ACID BATTERY SCIENCE

In 1859, Gaston Planté presented to the French Academy of Sciences a 9-cell battery and a report entitled:
"Nouvelle pile secoundaire d'une grande puissance"
This report was the birth certificate of the lead-acid storage battery (LAB). Since then lead-acid batteries have been indispensable part of everyday life. LAB is a modest, industrious and effective “worker”. Due to the low price of lead and the comparatively simple technology of manufacture LAB is cheap, too. As yet LAB is the most common electrochemical device that stores and converts energy. Automotive industry, information and telecommunication technologies, energy storage at electric power stations, etc., would have become much more expensive if lead-acid batteries were replaced by other power sources.

LAB technology has been studied and developed for nearly 150 years now.

By World War II battery companies’   R&D laboratories made considerable progress in improving the technology of battery manufacture. New materials were introduced in the battery practice as a result of which the performance of lead acid batteries enhanced.
After World War II, some university and academic laboratories were involved in studying the processes that occur during battery manufacture and operation. High-tech production processes were introduced which lead to significant improvement in battery performance and reliability.

Today, further research and development of LAB technology is needed aimed to improve performance stability, capacity and cycle life of LABs for a wide range of applications and for various duty modes.

LEAD-ACID BATTERY DEPATMENT

On January 1, 2007, Bulgaria became a full member of EU. As a matter of fact Bulgaria is one of most ancient countries on the European continent. It is the only country in Europe that has never changed its name. A number of historical circumstances have impeded Bulgaria from being one of the leading economically powerful countries in Europe, but Bulgaria has always played a significant role for the progress of education, science and culture.

Since 1966 the Lead-Acid Battery Department (LABD) of the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems (former CLEPS) at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has been carrying out intense scientific research in the areas of:

  • Fundamentals of lead electrode and lead-acid battery
  • Lead-acid battery technology
  • Lead-acid battery operation

aimed to contribute to the development of this important power source on a worldwide basis.

Our Laboratory employs multidisciplinary approach to lead-acid battery research. We have gained ample expertise in this field. The laboratory serves as a catalyst to innovative advances through its highly qualified research activities, ranging from fundamental discoveries to invention of new materials and technologies.
